Hi - I've had the basic Dell laptops for several years. I have 512 mb
ram, no special sound cards or anything. What makes the big difference is
what you use to record, as in a minidisc. I have had students use the Sound
Recorders in their computers, and they are not so hot.

When I got a minidisc last year, I didn't know I couldn't record to my hard
drive from the thing - at least not directly - and then I had to reformat
the recording before I could even edit it. So I started frequenting the
techie websites and found a couple of good programs to recommend.

There is an excellent ripping program called Audiograbber which is Free -
www.audiograbber.com - which will enable you to rip from minidisk to your
hard drive via Line-In Sampling (use the mic port). I am told that it's
not in stereo - that's a trick the recording industry uses because of
copyright, and it screws those of us who are trying to use our own work.
But we have to deal with it until something better comes along.

Also, the recorders in most computers don't have really good editing
features. Nero is probably the one most of the techies recommend the most.
I have it, I bought the Ultra version. And just last week I recorded a
student, we did 24 takes so we could choose the best of each, and I spliced
that thing together in 5 places, you can't tell even one place. It's the
easiest editing I've ever seen in a basic program, you can get really
closeup into the sound wave.

Basically what we did was this: Recorded the student on my mini disc. Then
transferred it into my computer via Line In Sampling in the Audiograbber
program. Then used Nero to do the editing. After you do the editing, you
go back to Audiograbber, and it will convert the file to MP3.

Tip - turn your speakers off when you are line-in sampling, or turn them
down very low - because you will pick up the echo in the mic!!!!!

If you'd like to hear a recording of my student, email me, and I'll send you
the file -

Lynn
