I have a piece of personal experience to share on that point.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop which continues to serve me faithfully.
This year, I needed to prepare a fully narrated PowerPoint presentation
on our local convention center as publicity for our National Square Dance
Convention. I tried a wide variety of microphones and headsets, but
regardless of the quality, I was getting unacceptable noise and hissing in
the result.
Finally, just as I was getting discouraged, I bought a USB headset for
about $50. With a USB headset, the analog-to-digital conversion happens
in an insulated module outside of the noisy laptop, so the signal inside
is entirely digital. The difference was absolutely remarkable. I could
hear the dog barking from three rooms away with the door closed.
