Exactly what do you mean when you say, "we decided it didn't sound right
to have one C and one Bb due to the differing tone colors"? I have
played gigs in which one clarinet player (for whatever reason) played a
part on the A and the other would play the part on B-flat. It is
certainly true to suggest that those tone colors differ, but would you
object if this happened in practice?

I suggest that the reason you give for using a C on one instrument but
not on the other is a straw man that presents no significant problem in
reality. It a very subjective statement that is without real substance.
Furthermore, it's the kind of remark generated to avoid using a C
clarinet more than anything else because it sound like science but isn't.
