hi,

first, i do not consider my self to be an expert by any test, in mouthpiece
design or history...but i have some knowledge that might be helpful...

second, while we may have differences in mouthpieces, we also have
differences in embouchure, mouth cavity volume, reeds, etc, etc...and much of
what we hear as the sound of an instrument is subjective, personal taste,
etc...that being said, here is a sampling of mouthpiece dimensions that might
be helpful toward your understanding of the differences in Chedevilles -
Kaspers. Marcellus liked Morre reeds - oops - no longer available...

so for something entirely different...

the following is a comparision of a few mouthpieces i have, these measurement
were taken today, i checked [i hope] for accuracy...please - i realise there
would be some differences in everyone elses mouthpieces... [reamers only have
a certain useful life...being worn down each pass...]

These mouthpieces all utilize the same [supposedly] basic Chedeville blank,
except the otto link. the tables are slightly concave, the baffles are
scooped as the old Chedevilles. each has a deep and resonant tone [however,
not on the same clarinet! - see below]

Mouthpiece Base int boredepth window tip
volume
Ch Chedeville 4 MO 0.583 0.532 0.508 0.331 0.425
17866

Kasper Cicero 14 0.590 0.541 0.537 0.312 0.425 17802

A Lelandais III 0.592 0.541 0.555 0.290 0.425 17101

Charles Bay MO-M 0.592 0.541 0.553 0.300 0.425 17627

Otto Link Reso Tone 5 0.581 0.558 0.516 0.314 0.445
18025

Borbeck 12 0.582 0.525 0.459 0.327 0.425
15947

Buffet ched c 0.582 0.528 0.450 0.315 0.435
15415
---------------
the base - is the bottom of the mouthpiece,at the tenon end
interior bore - is measured at the uppermost inner portion - before the
chamber
depth - is measure at 1/4" above the base of the window [because
thats as close as i can get my depth guage] it is the depth of the chamber.
window - is the interior distance between the bottom of the rails
tip - is the interior width of the tip

Volumetric analysis is a comparison of interior chamber volumes and NOT
actual volumes - it is for comparison purposes
--------------
All the above mouthpieces play marvelously. i would not have retained
possession if otherwise...i use van doren V12's 3 and have custom fit
ligatures to each mouthpiece, as the exterior diameters are all different by
fractional amounts.

however - i prefer one mouthpiece in particular on different clarinets...
on my buffet 97xxx, i favor the Ch chedervile [with a monneig A barrel] for
the best tone and total characteristic. if we look at the values below, one
might note that the interior bore of the mouthpiece flows nicely into the top
of the moennig A barrel - and then the bottom of the barrel flows nicely into
the bore of the clarinet. the moennig Bb barrel plays very well, however i
prefer the A barrel. playing well is not the case for the stock buffet
barrel. and if you look you will note that the mothpiece hits a bump at the
top of the barrel...it actually feels stuffy. the buffet ched mp i received
with the clarinet in the 60's [yes, i still have it] matches the buffet
barrel...but i don't care for the sound as much - and the dimensiions are so
different from the others presented...perhaps there is a correlation, yes....?

Base int boredepth window tip
Ch Chedeville 0.583 0.532 0.508 0.331 0.425
top bottom clar bore
Buffet Bb clarinet 97xxx 0.584
Buffet Bb barrel 0.582 0.581
Moennig Bb barrel 0.584 0.578
Moennig A barrel 0.586 0.580

The Ch Chedeville, by far my favorite for classical music, yet does not play
as well on my L series Selmer RI. here the kasper cicero wins the hearing
test hands down. The original barrel bore and clarinet bore are larger than
the buffet. as you can see, the match for the kasper is excellent for the
flow of air and sound transmission.
Base int boredepth window tip
Kasper Cicero 0.590 0.541 0.537 0.312 0.425
top bottom clar bore
Selmer L series Clarinet 0.589
Selmer L series barrel 0.590 0.587
Selmer old barrel 0.590 0.589
Selmer new barrel 0.595 0.593

i included an A clarinet and mouthpiece combo as well for comparison...
Base int boredepth window tip
Borbeck 12 0.582 0.525 0.459 0.327 0.425
top bottom clar bore
LeBlanc A clarinet 0.580
LeBlanc barrel 0.587 0.584
Moennig A barrel 0.586 0.580

There is an interesting relationship developing...the total
clarinet...including the player...

Now, someone is thinking...why was the otto link there?.... Well, when it
comes down to just simply having fun playing the clarinet - enjoyment = the
pleasure of a free blowing - wonderful sounding - easy to play mouthpiece! -
the otto link wins. it can play well with every clarinet i have...everyone i
haved ever worked on..and those that have yet be be in my hands..
i don't get it...its a bigger relative volume, bigger tip opening, etc but
with the same vandoren V12 reed - it is the most fun to play - and sound
marvelous as well.
it has its own resonent 'ping' was it Kalman Opperman who liked otto link
mouthpieces? i can't remember...

hope that helps - define what some of the differences might be...
