How do you measure internal dimensions? With tools inserted from outside?
With digital imaging techniques that weren't available 20 or 30 years ago? I
was always surprised at what seemingly crude measuring devices Matson used
(among them popsicle sticks cut to varying lengths to measure baffle and
chamber depths). Gigliotti found the inside measurements hardest to get at
without actually cutting a mouthpiece longitudinally and measuring or making
direct impressions. Of course, very few players would have been willing to
have this done to a prized mouthpiece, so the ones that were used as models
were perhaps not the cream of the crop. I'm very curious about how the state
of the art has improved.
