What she said. Julieanne, this list is about playing the clarinet, yes.
It's also (in the years I've been here, can it really be 1998??) about
people making political, sexual, and somewhat elemental noises. A few
of us (e.g, me, Leeson, a couple of others) are old enough to remember
Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain defending Little Round Top with his
20th Maine during the battle of Gettysburg (I think Dan and I were both
shooting at some Southern guys but it's hard to wound anyone when you're
firing reeds, unless they're No. 5's).

This list is about one of the members periodically writing postings in
the voice of her imperious cat and his nemesis the alley-rat.

It's about people talking about bodily functions. This morning was a
BIT over the top, yes, but then again, when you are old enough to be a
decorated veteran of a Civil War military band, you can talk about just
about any damn thing you wish.

More seriously--it's about people with years of experience sharing that
experience openly and without expectation of reward. It's about an old
yutz like me finally learning to get the nerve--in part because of this
list--at age 59 to go out and hire a 25-year-old kid to teach me how to
fix what I've been doing wrong for all these years. Not because I
expect to become Stanley Drucker, just because I want to do this thing
well enough to satisfy myself and to keep the instrument from turning
into some more eBay-fodder. This list is also about building character
as well as your chops.

It's endless back-and-forthing about who makes a better clarinet.
Answer (mine, anyway): "The equipment you know is the equipment you
like" (Life photographer Gjon Mili). Some of the discussants are
talented kids in high school. They're the really intimidating people here.

Some of the discussions I ignore--others are just too funny for words.
Some I learn from.

Don't leave yet. We're nuts but we're fun. It's not like a chamber
music ensemble, it's more like a Charles Ives symphony where all the
brass bands are playing at once. Once you figure out how to hear it
it's not cacophony, it's beautiful.
