Annie,
Annie,

Don't apologize for your opinions. They are as valid as anyone else's. =
Robert Marcellus was a wonderful clarinetist and I don't think anyone =
will ever replace him where sound production is concerned. I also don't =
think anyone intended to imply that he wasn't exactly what you stated he =
was. Unless I read something wrong, I don't think anyone implied that =
the Smith mouthpieces were imitations of the Kasper 13 and that playing =
one would imitate Marcellus' sound. Did you ever hear the person who =
designed and made your Vandoren mouthpiece? I don't think that person =
sounded like Marcellus either, but you have chosen that mouthpiece as =
your own. You don't sound like Marcellus either, but you sound pretty =
good to me (and I have heard you play). I hope the fact that I play a =
Smith mouthpiece won't prevent me from standing next to you and making =
music with you sometime soon.

Dear Audrey & List,
C.C. Lin has been writing to me privately for several months trying
to prepare his audition for Texas All State. When I answered his
question about "Marcellus" mouthpieces, I thought it was another one of
his letters to me. He had just written me one five minutes earlier about
Leblanc Concerto clarinets.
I am sorry that I broadcasted my opinions to the Klarinet List. But
after having played on a Kasper 13 for many years, I have not found any
"imitations" that appeal to me. I used to hear Marcellus play nearly
every week when I went to Oberlin. I spent a lot of time in Severance
Hall in Cleveland listening to him. I loved the way he played and the
tone that he produced. I have not heard many Marcellus "devotees" that
sound anything like him. I do not wish to get into any discussions or
arguments about mouthpieces with anybody. ANNIE=20
