A reply to Dan reminded me of an article in this morning's L.A. Times about
the Iraq National Symphony Orchestra performing either last night or
tonight at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. (I guess they were able
to pull it off).

In the section about how their sheet music collection was destroyed and
stolen when the regime fell, a statement was made about renting music. It
said:

"Under copyright law, some music cannot be purchased but only rented."

I know that the Wagner family keeps a tight rein on the master's operas
even though all the music and libretto are in the public domain. It would
be delicious to do a modern edition of the ring cycle and put it on the
web. But do any of you know of orchestra or band music which prominently
features the clarinet that falls in this category -- that is, it is clearly
in the public domain but it can only be rented? I rather felt that "Il
Convegno" fell into that category when I did the modern edition and put it
on my Web site. I like to keep a "to do" list on projects like
this. Suggestions would be cheerfully received.
