Well, if you've checked the instrument that you're looking at and are happy
with its playing qualities and its intonation (as checked both by ear and
with a tuner), there's no great reason to be concerned about the purchase.
It's a different situation when musically inexperienced parents are buying
instruments for their musically inexperienced children with nothing but
teachers' and store salesmen's recommendations to guide them. As a teacher,
I've had a very positive impression of Yamaha instruments and have
recommended them on that basis. The specific instance I asked about here has
simply alerted me that I need to update my information - both by testing for
myself over the next few weeks and by asking others what their experience is
(as I did here).

If you like the instrument's qualities, you've checked it over for pitch,
evenness and feel, and you've compared it to other brands and models and
find that it is the one you like best in your price range, go for it.
