Dear Karl,

In my school, we buy and use a large number of Yamaha student horns.
We also have Buffet B-10s and B-12 clarinets, and an occasional
student has shown up with a Vito that he or she has bought abroad. So
that's my basis for comparison.

As I've said before on the list, my experience with the Yamahas is
almost universally excellent - so much so that I recommend them almost
to the exclusion of all other student model horns. They're sturdy and
trusty and produce a good tone, and pitch has never been a problem -
that is, pitch problems have generally initiated in the students
themselves. The 4C mouthpieces have been surprisingly good in most
cases, too, though most of my kids now use a Clark Fobes Debut instead
(once the horn is 10 years old, that stock mouthpiece is hardly
suitable for hanging on a Christmas tree, let alone for playing).

I will dig out my Korg tuner to see if I find any anomalies, but my
experience says your positive attitude toward Yamahas is justified.
(The new 250 model seems like quite a nice horn indeed.) Perhaps your
student has gotten hold of a lemon?

Best,

Anna
