Subj: [kl] MP3s may be the answer to CD problems

My strategy has been to keep the original CD at home in the case and
carry a wallet of 24 dupe CDs in the car. If you are ripped off, (as
most of us have been) you still have the originals, cases and booklets,
and I believe this is within the spirit of the copyright laws. I
purchase the music and do not disseminate it.

However, I have recently begun using Apple iTunes to build an MP3 music
library, by 1) converting selected CD tracks from my collection to MP3
files, which just takes a few moments, and 2) by purchasing songs online
for $.99. An iPod MP3 player is next, and then I can carry thousands of
titles. The FM add-on devices which play the iPod library through your
car stereo are still problematical, but duping and carrying CDs will
soon be a thing of the past.

Yes, I know. Kids have been doing this for years, but it is still nice
to dial up Apple and on a whim, get a young Frank Sinatra singing All Or
Nothing At All in front of the Harry James band for $.99. A real time
warp. They have a growing classical section, too.
