Hi Susan,

Glad to hear you like the instrument. I know when I first started playing,
I was amazed at the vast literature in the Baroque and Classical period,
that I love so much, and that isn't available for clarinet. I have
recently started to play some of it on my C clarinet for fun and it is a
great challenge.

The little screw you turned is a fine-tuning screw, used to raise and lower
the key cup and adjust the pitch of the note played by the key it is
attached to. Try tightening it one quarter turn at a time in the opposite
direction. After each little turn, play the oboe. Keep doing this until
it plays properly again. If the oboe had been sitting for a very long time
before you started to play it, this may not work and you will have to find
a repair person to fix it. If you need help finding a place close to you
(up to maybe even a few hundred miles from home), write back. There are
good shops near you, I am certain. You might also post to
http://www.washburn.edu/cas/music/doublereed-l/ and sign on to the double
reed list. There are people there who can help better than I can. I can
repair clarinets, but oboes have their own personalities and vary slightly
in design from one maker to another. They can be VERY temperamental. Best
of luck!

Nancy
