We're getting into discussions here like reeds/mouthpieces, etc... But I'm
not a fan of 414's. Especially the BULS variety. They are just way too
bright and brittle/edgy sounding. The old EB (with the brass-ringed CK-12
capsule is pretty good, but that was the last good 414 AKG made). That
said, there is a guy here in LA that does modifications to 414s (amongst
other gear) that makes them into a usable mic. A new pair of those mics
with the mods run about $2K.
