While the material is important a better question might be what
characteristics fit the different players"
* Beginners
* Intermediate
* Advanced
* Professional
* Jazz
* Band
* Opera
* Other like chamber music
Another factor is price ranges:
* $40-75
* $75-100 &
* $100 +
I grew up with a woodwind G-7 which many teachers liked in California at the
time. I restarted on a gigliotti P32 after laying off for 15 years. It is
a good precise mouthpiece especially for intermediate students. The more
open P2 and P3 are personal choices Recently I switched to a Vandoren M-30
which has a lot of the characteristics of many expensive custom mouthpieces
for a very reasonable $52-57 depending on the catalog.
I would not mind hearing a discussion about ideal characteristics of the
mouthpiece itself. The material comes with the choice of brand and facing.

There is a 3rd alternative: hard rubber. Hard rubber and 'plastic'
(often acrylic plastic) may appear to be the same material at first
glance, but they aren't. I would guess that hard rubber is the most
popular material for mouthpieces (in modern times), especially in the
middle-priced range.
