In at least the Buffet case, the problem of the long register tube
was one of unintended consequences; it was implemented in an effort
to improve 3rd line Bb, but caused problems with notes around clarion G.
The problem has since been corrected by Buffet, but was part of the
instrument's design for a period of years (my R-13 A dates from around
1974). The replacement process is very easy, and I recall references
on this list to custom register tubes that can be used to improve things
not to mention making swabbing easier). My source for this information
as well as the fix) is also Tom Ridenour.

I'm not a techie, sorry. But I have this same problem with my
otherwise lovely R-13 A (vintage 1983), and I showed the horn to
Howard Klug, who referred me on to Luis Rossi. Luis said exactly what
John found out upon scrutinising his clarinets: that the speaker tube
was too long and its bore too wide. In addition, he says he tapers the
speaker tube on the outside in order to reduce the likelihood of
collision with the swab. (I hope I'm remembering that part correctly).
There are a number of repair techs and clarinet gurus who know how to
make a proper replacement speaker tube. I have yet to have this done,
but it's on my Xmas list. It never occurred to me to try and stick a
Bb speaker tube in there.
I can't answer John's original question, unfortunately, but I can ask
another one: Why in the devil do the major manufacturers NOT address
this problem? It seems pretty widespread.
ciao,
Anna
