Back in 1988 I bought a set of Buffet Prestige Clarinets and the A
Clarinet's Register tube was MUCH too long. Mark Jacobi made me a new
one and it worked fine afterwards. Abe Galper has a very good
Register Tube/Key invention - write me for details as I help Abe with
them if you have a Buffet and want your Bb to sound much more clearly
and in tune. It works wonders.

John,
Not that this is an answer to your question, but the same thing
happened
with a Leblanc Opus I purchased new at the beginning of the year as
they
stopped making that line.
When I finally got used to playing the thing (it's a great deal
different
than my R13) I became very aware of the stuffiness you described. I
took a
look down the bore, and there was this looooong register tube sticking
up!
I wrote to Tom Ridenour about it, and he said that Leblanc
manufacturing had
set many wrong-sized register tubes in their Opus clarinets out of
ignorance
and lack of attention. I sent the horn to him for a replacement, and
one
register tube and $160 (!) later, the horn performs nicely.
I wonder how many clarinets of other manufacturers have this problem
as they
leave the factory.
