Somewhere I have a book that claims that it was specific trees that were
floated down the river from northern Italy. And somewhere I have an
article that says that it was microbes in the river water. I've heard that
it was the varnish; and I've heard that it is the age of the instruments.

Some years ago a fellow here in town built one based on measurements he
took of a Strad - to play light jazz. He obtained his wood in this
area. The Minnesota Orchestra was in town for a concert, heard him, and
the string players were so impressed that they ordered violins and a cello
from him. (I have no idea if he completed the instruments.)
