And they share the same "Great Plains" culture as their counterparts
south of the 49th. So since there have been several objections to
"Midwest" (which I used as follow-up to James O'Briant's reference to
the town in South Dakota) how about let's substitute "Plains" or
"Breadbasket" (because it includes more area eastward than the Great
Plains) for the geographical region I described)? Although Minnesotans
might refer to being in the "upper midwest" as much as residents of
Missouri refer to themselves as being in "mid-America," a more
encompassing term for the whole cultural region is fine by me, and
"Breadbasket" is the term used by a primary source of inspiration for
these geo-cultural thoughts. (And I do think the wheat and barley
growers in Alberta, Saskatechwan, and Manitoba would gladly assent to
that better term, perhaps?)

I would be happy to drop "Midwest" in favor of "Breadbasket."
