It seems to me that the reason the museum is located in Vermillion SD is
because the people there had the "will" to build the collection where
people elsewhere did not. Really quite simple I would think.

The Cello comment is interesting however because one of the top violin
makers in the US is located in a rather small town in Indiana. Which based
on the general reaction to Indiana by East and West Coast inhabitants,
probably translates in their minds to living in the woods 40 miles from the
next nearest human inhabitant.

Personally my excursions to the "cultural centers" of this country are
quite fun, but I'm not surprised in talking to local inhabitants to find
that the vast majority of residents do not avail themselves of the
offerings. Just ask an average New Yorker when their last trip to the Met
occurred? Quite simply if a small town like Rockville Indiana can attract
3 million visitors a year from all over the world for its unique cultural
offering, then why not Vermillion SD?

Best
Rick
