I've had a quick play on this, and a bit more of a go with the alto
sax one. I thought the alto sax one was OK, although it obviously
affects the tone to some degree, but didn't get on with the clarinet
one (only tried it on clarinet, not soprano sax). I didn't like what
it did to the sound or feel/response of the instrument.

I guess it's better than not playing at all (if that's the choice),
but for emergencies only!
