Jody, I can't tell you how many times a student has come to me with a
poorly maintained instrument. Once we get that instrument in proper =
playing
condition with an appropriate mouthpiece and reed, progress accelerates
tremendously. All too often, they aren't playing well due to the fact =
that
their instrument is not in proper playing condition. I can't think of
anything more frustrating and discouraging to a kid who wants to play an
instrument. Unfortunately, it's usually the most musically sensitive =
kids
who are turned off easily by an inferior instrument. =20

The thing is, schools don't want perfect instruments. Most of the =
students
aren't playing good enough to appreciate a quality instrument (where I =
went
to school, most did not have any private lessons or anything similar, =
just a
group lesson from a woodwind teacher once a week and band practice once =
a
week) and spending a lot on getting an instrument fixed by a reputable
place, would be a waste of time and money.
