Imo, a checkup by a competent player or technician should be the _first_
thing, not the last thing, when an inexperienced student receives an
instrument. The inexperienced student doesn't know what to look for.
The definition of "inexperienced" is open to discussion, of course; but
it's like washing your hands before cooking food. It should be a
matter of standard proceedure --- even if you can't see any germs on
your hands.
