Of course the marines in the other bands do go through basic training. One
of my son's high school classmates was good enough on the trumpet (and knew
enough theory) to skip the Navy (Armed Forces ?) School of Music but got
stuck for an extra month or so in basic training trying to do enough pull
ups to pass. This was just a year ago. He finally made it.
