My Yamaha has always seemed a bit wild for me. I kept looking for
mouthpieces to tone it down, finally settling on a Selmer Soloist-style
C*. It would probably make a terrific rock horn, were I so inclined, but
the key layout is first-rate. The Martin's sound is so much more refined
and warm, and the intonation is remarkably accurate, most noticeably in the
palm keys, where my Mark VI alto tends to go sharp. That surprised me a
bit when I first played the Martin, since my 1930 Martin alto, one of the
short-lived "Typewriter" series (with the round pearl buttons on EVERY
keytouch), has some pretty serious quirks in that area. It is not as easy
to play ergonomically as the Selmers and Yamahas, although it IS better
than the "Typewriter!" It was considered pretty good in its day as far as
that goes, on a par with the Conn 6M/10M.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
