In general, I will alwqays buy from the local music
store. I feel that I get a more personal sense of
satisfaction from dealing with local people who know
all the local band directors and private teachers.
While I understand that sometimes you can get what
seems like a better price from a catelog company, the
manufactures are trying to work that out as well. Some
manufacturers only allow their instruments to be sold
for so much of a "discount" off the list price and
don't sell them any cheaper to the larger copmpanies
than the smaller ones. Selemr is one of the best
companies to deal with if you are a small music store,
there are so many different types of programs they
offer that it is feasable for any store to stock as
many pro horns as they want, the issue is that its not
cost effective for the smaller stores to stock 30 pro
horns of any type. Boosey & Hawkes and all there
paretn companies that change faster than the seasons
are a b**** to deal with because of their requiremetns
on ordering, however, I'm told their policices will be
changing to benefit smaller stores. I myself bought
all of my horns from small local stores.

Now, I'm sure this next statement may cause quite a
bit of irritation and may even anger some people, but
I don't think that the need to try 15 horns before
choosing one is an adequate excuse for choosing
smaller companies over the larger ones. I think good
horns can be foudn at local stores, all of mine from
the local stroes are fine instruments. Again I'm sorry
if that idea offends you (and I do have a few more
stronger opinions on the subject), but I think local
stores deserve the support of professional musicians.
Now of course, there are always exceptiosn, especially
ones that stem from location problems, if there are no
stores around you then you have no choice, but if you
live in an area that has several local stores please
go to them first.

And thats the end of my rant....for now.
