I would recommend asking the store to put the clarinet in good playing
condition, something it seems a reputable operation woul do before reselling
an instrument of this caliber, unless they put too much money into it on a
trade or such and are trying to make as much money as possible on their
mistake without increasing what they have invested in repair labor and
materials...I spent fifteen years in a great family-owned operation running
the band & orch. shop and working in the repair shop. We had pride in our
service and sales of used instruments and if anything ever went out the door
in less-than-optimum condition, we would make it right at our expense.

As for the bell, I doubt they'll be inclined to order a new Buffet bell at
this point for the cost reason. So unless the real bell is hiding in another
case somewhere, I'd ask them to put the clarinet in good condition, or hand
my money back. Any fair and honorable business owner will oblige. Our state
attorney general hs dealt with problems like this with local pawn shops,
because they sell some real junk to unsuspecting folks that was junk when
they took it in. One pawn dealer finally started selling us his instruments
to avoid the lawsuits and hassles.

Subject: [kl] Authentic Buffet Bell

> A student purchased a used R-13 ($1000) from a local store with a good
reputation, up to this point. The bell is not stamped Buffet. There is no
stamp of any sort on it. How many think it is a Buffet bell? Should he
demand a Buffet bell, seeing as that is what was supposed to have been sold
to him? The clarinet leaks like a sieve. He took it back to the store and
they replaced three pads. Every pad is black and the clarinet has corks
that are in bad condition and need to be replaced. If I had been present, I
would have advised against buying this clarinet. Please give me some
feedback.
