Subj: [kl] Strauss Happy Workshop, funny clarinets and rare Mozart
Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 12:16:00 -0500

Kammermusik Workshops of Santa Fe (the same that Dan Leeson came to last
year to lead the Mozart 13) is running a workshop from February 13 - 15,
again in Santa Fe, to work on and give a "workshop performance" of the
Strauss Happy Workshop. This work, from near the end of his life, uses =
large
wind forces: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, clarinets in C, Bb/A, basset horn and =
bass
clarinet, two bassoons and a contra, and four horns. He is said to have
added the extra woodwinds to balance the four horns after hearing Opus 4 =
and
7 wind suites later in life. Clearly, reducing the horns was not an =
option!

We are taking two players per part, who will alternate in the =
performance.
There aren't any vacancies for regular A/Bb clarinets as the numbers =
were
immediately filled by previous Kammermusik members. However there are =
single
vacancies for C clarinet (along with Joe Fasel of this list), basset =
horn
(along with me) and bass clarinet. There are vacancies also for flutes,
horns and contrabassoon. The conductor is Gerry Fried, an Oscar-winning =
film
composer, who before his film music career played oboe in the Los =
Angeles
Symphony under Toscanini. Details and web registration are on
www.kammermusikworkshops.org.

Later in that week (18-19 Feb) there will be an opportunity to audit =
another
workshop at Santa Fe, and hopefully also in Albuquerque on 20 Feb, on
"Rarest of Rare Mozart". This is Mozart's music involving basset horns,
including various fragments. Dan Leeson is coming over to lead this, and =
he
is preparing the playing parts for the music, much of which is =
unpublished.
We have just one playing vacancy for this, for a basset horn to play =
with
Dan and me (but the middle basset will be played on clarinet if we get =
no
takers). Of course, you will be outshone by our gorgeous Fox =
cocobolo/gold
instruments, hewn from the same tree, so you will have to play even =
better
than normal to get any attention.=20

After this, Dan and I are planning to take the Rare Mozart Show on tour =
in a
few southwestern universities, using local talent for parts other than =
our
two basset horns. I'll put details on the list when this is arranged, in
case anyone wants to come.
