How not to clean a case:

One of my 7th grade students recently spilled yogurt in his clarinet case.
Strange, I know, but it gets worse. To clean the yogurt, he filled up the
kitchen sink with water and soap and put the whole case in to soak for a
while. Then he took the case out of the water, dripping wet, put his
clarinet back in the case, closed it up and left it to sit for about 3
days!!! This was during a warm spell we had and the stench that resulted was
disgusting. He actually brought the clarinet to his lesson and was going to
play on it with that awful smell and every pad ruined.

At least, the clarinet itself was a very old, non-name wooden clarinet
passed down from a family member that was in & out of the repair shop on a
semi-weekly basis. I had been trying to convince his family all year that a
new student model would be better for him.

Now he has a new Buffet E11 that he is taking good care of.
