Patricia,
There is no problem about using CD players with headphones on any =
flight,
national or international, apart from the first and last ten minutes. =
The
only no-no is using radio headphones. I agree, United classical music is
crappy. Lufthansa is excellent though!
Your own headphones are likely to be much better than the airline ones. =
If
you can stretch to it, get good quality ones that are also active
sound-reducing for external noises. I have a Sony pair which are great. =
Bose
make a pair that are probably better and fold up flatter. But if you =
want to
use them for the airline audio, you need a one-pin to two-pin adaptor.
(Likewise you cannot use most airline phones for your CD without an
adaptor).
In recent months I have given up taking CDs on a flight, and bought an =
Apple
iPOD. This needs preparation in transferring CDs to your computer and =
then
into the iPOD as MP3 format, but it is perfectly good enough quality for =
a
flight - in the environment of a plane I really cannot tell the =
difference.
And I can get several DAYS of continuous music into this little box, =
about
the size of a reed case.

Which brings me to another question for you seasoned folks who take=20
music with you: What are the protocols for using CD players on board=20
planes when flying on international flights? Mine is battery-powered=20
and does NOT have a radio component, just headphones. I'm flying=20
United to Amsterdam, then United again from Amsterdam to Stockholm.
I will be calling the airlines to be sure, but at the same time, if=20
someone can help out here, I'll be grateful (since half the time, sales=20
folk and even customer service people don't always know ALL the =
policies!)
Cheers,
Patricia Smith
