I wanted to say that I have been teaching "flutaphone" now for 3 years
at the "Golden Mountain Montessori School". A flutaphone is a plastic
thing, sort of like a "tonette" of "song flute". I like them better than
recorders because they have a thumb hole that functions similarly to a
clarinet, and the holes are easier to cover. I offer flutapone to 2nd
and 3rd graders. I think my flutaphone students sound great. We don't
read music. I teach them to play certain tunes by ear and signalling
them how many holes to cover. With the left hand, we can play "Hot Cross
Buns", "Merrily we Roll Along", "Go Tell Aunt Rhodie", "A Claire de la
Luna" (I play the bridge), "ode to Joy" and a couple of finger
excercises that include "Follow the Yellow Brick Road"
(fa-me-re-do-re-me-fa) and "Mommy Made me Mash my M & M's"
(do-re-me-fa-sol-fa-me-re-do). If anybody wants to know, I will glady
tell you their "repertiore" as they master the right hand.
The kids just love flutaphone class and some of them have gone on
to become wonderful clarinet students in the 4th grade. I usually have 5
or 6 in a class and have figured out a way to involve all of them so
that everybody plays the right notes. I wish you could have heard them
play "String of Pearls" at their 2nd grade graduation last year, along
with my boom box accompaniment. ANNIE
