Subj: [kl] Anybody using Mozart reeds?

We tried both Mozart and Gonzales, essentially since they were being
produced by the same company. In blind tests, we (my students and I) felt
that the Gonzales was much more consistent. We got more out-of-the box
usable with Gonzales. In fact, the first two boxes had 1-2 in each box that
required a little adjustment. The rest were usable, as is -- although we,
like most clarinet players, can't resist in doing a little adjusting, just
to see if we can improve on the original, even though it works well. The
Mozarts tended to be a bit stuffy, and inconsistent in strength.

In all honesty, the last box of Gonzales that one of my students ordered was
peculiar in that most of the reeds (all marked 3) were closer to 4. I hope
this was a bit of human oversight, and not a problem with the brand.
