Starting out a 7 yr old with either the Lyons Clarinet or the (even
better) KinderClari is a very, very good alternative.

The Kinderclari is an amazingly flexible and non resistant Eb Clarinet
designed for kids under 8-9 similar to the Suzuki instruments. (I have
both)

Check them out - both are quite good .
