When I bought my Windows 95 Gateway computer, the model I chose came chock
full of audio software. I have no idea why. Then I added a bunch more
myself, most of which I've never used. Audio Station is the jewel of all
of the software. It allows you to feed analog input to it and produce a
wav file which can then be displayed as a sonogram. You can zoom in close
to a particular section, you can cut and paste sections, and in particular
you can shorten or lengthen the silent part at the beginning and the
end. If there is any noise or other junk anywhere, it can be removed, if
it occurs in an otherwise silent place.

I just bought a new HP Compaq laptop which does everything I need except
produce those yummy sonograms. I'm still looking around. Voyetra still
sells something called Audio Station (or maybe Recording Studio, I don't
remember) but the company is very hazy about whether it has a program with
a sonogram. I can't remember for sure but I think I tried to install my
old version of Audio Station on my new laptop and it didn't work. I'll try
again this evening.

Anyway, once the .wav file is produced and edited, it can be converted to a
standard audio CD by any number of pieces of software. If anyone has a
favorite sonogram program, please let me know.
