I agree with Fernando on this one, but I do think it's worthwhile to
put in breath marks that suit you and then practice those. Your
preferred breathing pattern may change over time, of course. But I
have had students who have made the mistake of NOT practicing
breathing at pre-designated - or musically sensible - spots, and then
they try to perform the pieces. They invariably make more mistakes
because of having omitted this attention to breathing within the
context of the music at hand. The young ones are surprised when I tell
them they ought to practice breathing within a given piece of music
just as they practice fingerings and dynamics.
