Susan -

Your experience is the opposite of mine. In fact, I had never heard of
double lipping until joining klarinet in '96 or '97. My first thought was
that it sounded like a good way to get two sore lips rather just one. As
you know, there are some accommodations that a double lipper must make, but
the advantages to double lipping far out-weigh any disadvantages, in my
opinion.

Sore lips from double lipping can easily be avoided by having your dentist
take upper and lower impressions for soft plastic covers for your teeth. My
dentist used the soft clear plastic that they use in teeth whitening
procedures. Other type and cheaper lip protecters have been discussed on
the list many times.

Obviously, my suggestion is for you to return to double lipping and enjoy
playing even more.

Happy double lipping.

Regards,

Gene N.

Oh, jeez!

I was taught double-lip, by a boonies band teacher, many, many years ago.
Didn't know there was any other way. Was completely embarrassed when I
finally
went to a "real" teacher (not that many years ago) and found out I was
supposed
to be teething the thing.

So I switched -- not entirely successfully, and not without much trauma. But
reading all these posts, I have tried the ol' double pucker again, and it
still works. Then I do it the other way, and maybe it sounds better. I
don't
know.

Can one be ambidextrous? Ambi . . . whatever?
