Up to about 5 minutes ago I had been saying that Mozart never wrote a
low d-flat for a basset horn (or a basset clarinet, for that matter, but
that is much more problematic). And then, as I was preparing a set of
parts for a performance of the six notturni, I came to "Se lontan, ben
mio, tu sei," K. 438 that is scored for 2 B-flat clarinets, 1 basset
horn in F (he also calls for one in G in these 6 pieces), and three singers.

There in m. 7, as big as life, is a low d-flat.

As I said, it is the little things in life that make me happy.

Would you belive it? A low d-flat. Remarkable.
