Carlinda,

One way is to just think of them as a quarter of an 8th note. So if you beat to the 8th note instead of the quarter note then they are "one-ee-and-uh", just as 16th notes are to a quarter note beat. As you get faster you can get to "one-ee-and-uh-two-ee-and-uh" (or something simmilar) all in one quarter note.
