Walter, I also am not going to go into the "material doesn't matter"
though you certainly know my views on that subject. But I was asked,
"how can you hold that opinion and then buy a cocobolo wood basset horn?
The answer I gave was exactly what you have said here. It's gorgeous.

This gives rise to the next question: "does the physical beauty of the
instrument affect your playing?", and I am very much of the opinion that
it does. I play better (or think I do) on a thing of beauty than on
something that is, in my eyes, less beautiful. I even play better (or
think I do) when my fingernails are manicured because my hands look
spiffier.
