Georg,

Your best bet would be to write to the people at Hammerschmidt and ask =
if it is appropriate to remove the lacquer. I can assure though, that =
your clarinet will not leak air if it is removed. I know that Wurlitzer =
lacquers their instruments inside also, but don't know why. I believe =
we had a discussion about this not too long ago and if you check the =
archives, you might well find something there. It is my guess that =
these instruments are lacquered to make the condensate inside flow more =
easily, so as not to get in the tone holes. Just a guess though. But =
your clarinet won't leak air.....unless it is made of Swiss cheese, =
maybe!
