I haven't any personal experience (as I was only looking at top quality
instruments) but I can tell you that the dealer I bought mine from was
speaking very highly of the Noblet. There was no question of any
commercial gain - he knew I wasn't buying at that end of the market!!!
People also speak highly of Patricola - only I don't know how much one
of those would be.

I think the Eb clarinet is worthy of investment. It is a pig to play
well. The tuning is often out, and is I think the most important thing
about any potential instrument, save that you need to make sure your
fingers fit.

As always the advice MUST be to try several instruments. Take a tuner
with you if you have any doubt at all about your ear. If you haven't
played Eb before then you'll be starting at a disadvantage - it is very
different from Bb.

I love the instrument - I think it has real character and adds a great
deal to orchestral or band colour, but it isn't something to take up
occasionally. Having said that, if you're anything like me you will find
it addictive!

Subject: [kl] Effer choice

I have the opportunity to play the Eb soprano in an upcoming concert,
and of
course neither I or anyone else in town seems to have one. I was
thinking I
might spring for a "student" model, and I see that Vito, Amati and
Selmer
all have a model in that category.

Please, I know the hazards of student vs. intermediate or pro, but this
is a
one time shot and I don't want to spend a lot of bucks. I am hoping that
some of our list readers who work with students and student model horns
might give me a brief appraisal of the effer in these brands. I have had
several Vito clarinets and found them very satisfactory.

I would appreciate any assistance offered, and you may reply directly to
me
if you wish. Thanks.
