I did read it, and I hope that I understood it. Without intending
insult, and without expecting to resolve the debate simply by declaring
my own beliefs, we are different people. I can't convince myself (and
I've tried to do so) that 'making an analytical cut between composer and
performer' is inappropriate. As in any debate, definitions are often
the key to the debate's outcome, and this appears to be a point where
you and I are operating from different definitions.

Tony, I know that both of us are trying to talk about this without being
'ad hominem'. And yet we both have feelings that we want to express.
I'm sure we both understand that music is personal, and sometimes it's
difficult to discuss personal emotions without causing insult or
offense. I'm saying my prayers.....

If the 'other side' of a debate automatically defers to those with more
experience (which you unquestionably have), then bad things can happen
--- as sometimes, albeit perhaps only occasionally, happens when clerics
and politicians with the most experience claim to know best. The other
side needs to speak up anyway. Without me explaining 'my side' of this
topic, other members of this list would have less to consider, and this
isn't necessarily a good thing. While I may have the wrong slant on
this topic, I hope that I'm not totally ridiculous. Perhaps it's more
appropriate to say that performers and non-performers have different
points of view, and perhaps this is (in part, at least) *why* some of us
are performers and some aren't.
