Presumably music education is not totally uniform in any state (or
nation), but my daughter has lived, taught (piano), and sent children to
school in California, Oregon and Wisconsin. Her children haven't
reached high school age yet, where you describe a major change in your
local music enviroment. My daughter's recent experiences in Wisconsin
(near Milwaukee) are unquestionably "Yes, Wisconsin has it better where
music education is concerned." Another daughter lives in Kansas. She
doesn't teach, but she has sent childen to school in Calfornia, Kansas,
and Oklahoma. Both daughters have told me that music education is
mandatory in their school districts. One of the districts does not
provide instruments, and I grumped about this at first. But after some
sober thought, I was happy to give instruments to two of my
grandchildren (after I bought a wood clarinet for myself, and I began to
reflect on the meaning of sharing).
