For the record, it was a cantor named Alberto Mizrahi (sp?), who
apparently is one of the better known cantors. He and two other
cantors were singing mostly Jewish prayers. They also sang one song
from Fiddler in the Roof. The performance was, as you would expect,
filled with emotion, and when the PBS announcer asked (this is almost
verbatim, if not absolutely verbatim): "What emotions do you feel as you
sing these prayers?", Mizrahi replied by saying (again, as nearly
verbatim as I can remember): "With this music, I restrain my emotions
and allow the music to speak for itself. The music must speak for
itself."

I'm not arguing against this concept, but in view of the emotional
performances, I wanted to hear other people's responses in a broader
context.

Thank you for replying.
