Generally, I have stayed out of method discussions, since I've not
had any continuing students for 20 years. I don't know if Randy's approch
is correct - or not. But it closely parallels an accepted practice for the
teaching of voice. My wife is a certified voice therapist (NOT music
therapist). She recognizes that voice is like playing the
sax - practically everyone can make a sound: but few can make a good
sound without disciplined training (which should start as early as
possible in the process). Proper breathing technique for voice and
clarinet is the same - and it isn't glamorous or likely to make a student
look sexy while doing it.
I've never met anyone who could play the clarinet without
instruction - let alone play it well. The Suzuki method might be
beneficial for clarinettists. The fact that it hasn't
developed IMHO derives from the fact that clarinettists seem more in need
of "instant" gratification than do string players. (You don't see string
players sticking their instruments in their mouths!)
