Oh, I beg to differ! I think that before any of us teaches any more
beginning students, we should assemble a committee. We should be sure
that
this committee has a make up representing the racial, ethnic, economic
and
gender breakdown of the potential clarinet community around the world.
(Of
course, we should form a panel to have hearings about each of the
members of
this committee and approve them.) We should have the study funded by
grants
obtained through governments as well as foundations and corporations.
Next,
we should then determine a procedure using a variety of students, again
covering all groups, aptitudes, physical make up, learning disabilities,
etc.

The study should use a variety of equipment ranging from the best
professional handmade variety down to the cheapest possible and in all
combinations. We should use a variety of teaching techniques, possibly
taught through electronic means, to avoid the human factor clouding
results.
This should follow common scientific practices. Data should be compiled
over
many years to determine long range success of the participants. Charts
should be made and data analyzed. Then and only then will we have a true
understanding of the right way to teach and the effect of equipment and
techniques. Of, course supplemental studies will have to be done once we
find the flaws in the original study.

Results should be published as the Clarinet Research and Practices
(CRAP)
