Sue, Just for the record, I have also started kids in large groups =
during
beginning summer band camps and I still give them the same information, =
tips
and attention that I give my private students. You're correct in saying
it's not exactly the same, since it's not one-on-one but I still would =
let
beginning students and parents know there is a wide variety of choices
available in reed/mouthpiece brands and strengths. I did have one poor =
girl
who had grave difficulties for an entire week once, much to her
embarrassment and this is of course rather mortifying for a junior high =
or
middle school age child in a group of peers. I had told her and her =
parents
she needed a different reed, since I simply didn't have the time in that
group situation to work on her's. She didn't get the new reed until the
last day of band camp and she finally could produce a decent tone.
Unfortunately, the band director instructs the parents to rent the =
clarinet
and to purchase several reeds but her parents had only purchased one for
her. It just happened to be a bad one. Things could have been so much
different if she had begun with at least 3 reeds of varying brands and
strengths to choose from and try out. =20
