Of course, it probably goes without saying (but I'll put it in for the
record) that all of the recommendations you've gotten make assumptions about
the mouthpieces the students are playing that need to be evaluated case by
case. I doubt if even a complete beginner could get much that is acceptable
with a #2 of any brand if he happens to wander in with a Gigliotti P that
someone gave him. Put a significantly more open or shorter facing on his/her
clarinet and even a #3 may be too stiff. Since you're talking about private
school and home school pupils whose families probably have more money to
spend on their equipment, almost any mouthpiece could show up in these
students' cases.
