Am completely right handed, and use this key a lot, especially in
chromatic
passages. I have no memory of how I started to do this.

I'll bet the farm that you started when you were a beginner on the
Clarinet and the Band Director taught you that fingering.
I know of players who saw off that key as their fingers don't lay well
with it in place. Peter Hadcock did that if I recall.
