Subj: RE: [kl] [clarinet] reeds for beginners?

A lot of folks may disagree with me, but I have been starting my little =
kids on a #2 Legere (synthetic) reed. Each reed is about $13 US, but =
they last for a few months, at least, and when not bashed around, can =
last longer than that. They are easy to keep clean and won't change in =
structure unless placed in hot water (then they soften slightly). The =
sound quality they produce is excellent. The band directors have been =
pleased with my students' progress and are happy that they always come =
to class prepared (no broken reeds). I factor the cost of supplying two =
reeds per student per year into the cost of lessons. Most of my little =
kids can manage on two reeds per school year, once they are taught how =
to care for them.

If I had to choose regular reeds, I would use Gonzales Brand "For Our =
Friends" reeds in whatever strength you feel is appropriate. They come =
in quarter strengths, 2.5 thru 5 and come ten to a box. You can order =
direct from the manufacturer at www.daviecane.com. If they are a little =
too hard, then thin the tip a little. If you don't know how to fix =
reeds and can't thin the tip, then go with Mitchell Lurie. They don't =
last long, but they are consistent from reed to reed and most are always =
playable right out of the box. Those are my choices. Hope they are =
helpful.
