I think Dan was being facetious to a degree, but I understood his point. =
In general, I think he was saying it is hard to understand life without =
having lived some of it first.

Where instinct is concerned, my instinct about Motzartian topics is much =
better than the instinct about Brahms. I have no trouble with Schubert =
or Mendelssohn or Schumann, etc. I love playing anything =
impressionistic too and don't have difficulty with most 20th century =
stuff. I have the same problems with jazz though ,that I have with =
Brahms. I can't figure it out on my own. I can play it if I have heard =
it, but don't give me something that I can't listen to first. I seem to =
always have to ask for direction. =20

Where jazz is concerned, I even have to have it written on paper to =
execute it properly. I have played in a jazz band for the last seven =
years. I can play "in the style", but I can't improvise. I just don't =
seem to be able to figure it out. Next summer, I will be going to an =
improvisational "camp" and hopefully will learn something.
